Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Group 1; the dental Water Jet. The patients were taught by a dentist how to clean their teeth with the Water Jet device before starting the dental cleaning procedures at the baseline visit. Special heads for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment provided by the company were used with each device. The patient applied the Water Jet device on each tooth separately for 10 seconds starting from the upper jaw to the lower jaw. Cleaning procedure was done for one time. Participants use a conventional toothbrush with anti-plaque toothpaste.
Group 2; the orthodontic toothbrush. The patients were taught to use the modified vertical method, and the patient brushed the teeth of the upper and lower jaws using orthodontic toothbrushes, and anti-plaque toothpaste.

Summary
Brief summary
Orthodontic treatment improves the masticatory function and the aspects of facial aesthetics through the correct alignment of the teeth. If oral hygiene is not maintained during fixed orthodontic treatment, this leads to plaque buildup and gingivitis. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of the dental Water Jet (DWJ) and the manual toothbrushes in removing dental plaque around orthodontic braces in adolescents. This was a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT). Forty-five patients were randomly allocated into three groups (DWJ, the orthodontic toothbrush (O-TH), and the conventional toothbrush (C-TH)). The Orthodontic Plaque Index (OPI) was recorded at baseline and after the cleaning procedure. The level of oral hygiene was not satisfactory in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. In addition, the efficacy of the dental Water Jet was not superior to orthodontic toothbrush nor to conventional toothbrush in plaque removal.
