Description of intervention(s) / exposure
The training program will consist of:
1. 9 x 10 minute online educational lectures focussing on the 5 steps in Evidence Based Practice (ask, acquire, appraise, apply and assess). The 9 lectures will be made available to the participants via Vimeo in the PEDRO website
2. 3 x 1.5 hours of practical training sessions at each hospital in SWSLHD. Facilitators of these sessions will consolidate the online educational lectures with case examples and group work activities.
3. Sessional attendance checklists will be used to monitor attendance at each practical session. Website analytics will be used to monitor the number of views of each video. There will be an opportunity for staff who have not viewed the online lectures to watch them on the day prior to the practical session.

Statistical methods / analysis
Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) will be used to quantify pre- and post-training scores for the total score for the Assessing Competency in Evidence-based Medicine scale and the total scores for the four subscales (Research, Healthcare Provider, Setting, Presentation) of the Barriers and Facilitators to Using Research in Practice (BARRIERS) scale. Frequency of responses to the 15 items in the Assessing Competency in Evidence-based Medicine scale and three open-ended questions (add and score other possible barriers, rank the three greatest barriers, and list factors perceived as facilitators of research utilisation) of the BARRIERS scale will be tabulated.

Summary
Brief summary
Utilisation of evidence-based practice is important in delivering the most effective physiotherapy intervention to improve patient outcomes. Clinicians often find the implementation of evidence-based practice challenging due to a lack of time and skills or collegial attitudes to changing practice. Ability in evidence-based practice improves with training, however, published training programs rarely address all five steps involved in evidence-based practice (i.e., asking, acquiring, appraising, applying and assessing). The disproportionate focus on critical appraisal of research programs is likely to limit the impact of training. Also, not well defined in the research literature is how well physiotherapists implement the five steps in evidence-based practice. Thus, the aims of this research project are to: (1) quantify physiotherapist’s knowledge and skills in evidence-based practice; (2) quantify the barriers to the application of research evidence in the clinical setting; and, (3) pilot test a tailored, multifaceted and integrated evidence-based practice training program for physiotherapists working in hospitals within the South Western Sydney Local Health District.
