Description of intervention(s) / exposure
A cross-sectional, mixed method survey of Australian and New Zealand anaesthetists by using commercial software (Survey Monkey®). An invitation letter which includes objectives of the study, a brief summary of the study, information about consent and a link to the online survey (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JPZJC7R) will be distributed to consultant anaesthetists via an invitation letter to directors of anesthesia departments asking them to forward an email link to their fellows of ANZCA in their department. The email link will have an invitation letter that clearly informs the participants to complete the survey. The survey is voluntary and anonymous, and no email or website IP (internet protocol) address will be collected. It is estimated that the survey is take approximately 5 minutes to complete. The survey will be open for approximately one month.
Objectives of the study are to discover Australian and New Zealand anaesthetists' attitudes of, and perceived benefits and barriers to attending the funeral of patients whom they cared for.

Ascertain the attitudes of anaesthetists towards attending patient funerals. Attitudes will be assessed based on the rate of funeral attendance by anaesthetists.

Anaesthetists' perceived benefits to attending the funeral of patients whom they cared for. This will be assessed with multiple-choice survey questions that ask participants to choose all pre-written benefits to anaesthetists or to the family by an anaesthetist's attendance at a patient's funeral. There is also a question that invites participants to suggest other benefits to funeral attendance which were not listed in multiple-choice questions.

This study is going to employ the conventional 95% confidence level with margin of error of 7%. According to the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) website, there are 6500 active fellows in Australia and New Zealand. Hence the population for our study is 6500. Using the formula for sample size, we aim for 191 participants to achieve 95% confidence level with margin of error of 7%.

Data will be presented as frequency counts, percentages, and mean or median as indicated. Associations of demographic, age, gender, public vs. private hospital, type of hospital and the area of practice will be examined and attitudinal responses evaluated by using multivariable ordered logistic regression. All analyses will be performed using Stata 10 (Stata Corp, College Station, TX).
